Meet Tara, the new Mexico milkmaid

Welcome and thank you for checking out my blog!

Hey everyone,

I am Tara. Better known online as the New Mexico Milkmaid. A little bit about myself. I am a fifth generation dairy farmer, farm wife, environmental scientist, mom to two girls and a New Mexico Native. My friends would probably tell you that I am a dairy advocate, whiskey drinker, fast talker, lover of all things Southwest and avid boho braid enthusiast.

How did I end up in dairy farming? Well I grew up my whole life on my family dairy. Then after earning my degree in Environmental Science from the University of Arizona, I moved back to New Mexico, got married and accepted a position as an environmental scientist. Now, my husband, Daniel, and I along with our two girls live and work on our dairy in Eastern New Mexico.

I have spent the last 9 years working as an environmental scientist on dairy farm projects throughout the southwest. I assists my clients with state and federal regulatory compliance, water conservation, sustainable management practices, and quarterly monitoring reports. And as a certified NRCS technical service provider, I am able to assist producers with nutrient and irrigation management.

I began sharing our story because I found that people often have several misconceptions about farmers and farming. I wanted to set the record straight about dairy farm life and on farm sustainability.

One of my other passions is serving as president of United Dairy Women. A charity committed to providing local New Mexico children’s homes with the recommended three servings of dairy a day for the entire year. United Dairy Women has raised more than $1.3 million to further their cause.

As you check out my website and social channels, you will find a little bit of everything: the day-to-day life of a dairy farmer, environmental sustainability, motherhood, favorite recipes, charity work and travel. I am driven by my passion for sharing the facts about dairy farming.

Dairy farming is not just a job to us, it is a way of life. We put our hearts and souls into our cows and our land. So I hope you will follow me on my journey as I share our story about dairy farming with you.

Udderly in love with dairy,
New Mexico Milkmaid
